Wow, I didn't even know that you could adopt a retired military dog. I thought all of them - military, law enforcement, etc. Lived out their retirement days with their previous handlers.
Gonna go read some more info. Wonder if they include in the adoption papers the 'kill' command words :D

I actually posted the silly question as the first thing that comes to most peoples minds are "How dangerous are ex-military/enforcement dogs?" Thinking that the wrong word said at the wrong time could result in little Timmy becoming a chew toy.
Although I'm sure it can be found on the other pages, my hope was to note here that these animals are not vicious by nature nor would there be any accidental maulings - although I do believe that they'd make some of the most protective of their new owners animals you could find.

All of the dogs available for adoption have to pass a set of tests and receive approval both from a veterinarian and from Lackland that they are not vicious and are safe for adoption. Dogs who do not pass these tests are euthanized when they can no longer work. However, even a dog who is deemed non-vicious will usually attack when given the command, and if put in a stressful setting is still prone to attacking. Ex-military dogs in general are no more dangerous than an average pet once adopted but there are stupid people who adopt an ex-military dog and bring it to crowded, noisey places and that is when people get bitten.
