Every now and then, the Pioneer has to help a civilian ship out in trouble. This time it was the cargo ship of Ace and Coz, who were stranded by a drive system malfunction. A small repair team was sent to the ship to make the repairs, one of which was Tiayneq, who is basically a spaceship plumber. He had been looking at the piping and pumps of this ship, and saw that these were far from standard specifications. He hoped that this wouldn't form much of a hindrance. But alas... some of these pipes could spontaneously leak at high pressure when he tried to repair them. It was a bit unfortunate that this water leak hit one of the ship's owners...

Yes to both, and this is a major plot point in Pioneer episode 3.
There are translators, which can help them to translate any language quickly. However, these translators also have an active mode, which may be more exhausting to the brain, but helps you to learn a language quickly. Most people will learn Standard Galactic this way, a back up language in case the translator malfunctions.
The translator also manages to translate sign language, something that really benefit Tom and Nurlan, who mainly communicate this way.
