In this timeline, The Aztec Empire repels the Spanish Forces and Hernan Cortes is Killed in Battle. The Triple Alliance would further consolidate their realm by punishing subjects that sided with the Spanish as smallpox and other diseases ravaged Mesoamerica.
The Spanish Colonial Authorities in the Caribbean, set back by Cortes' disastrous expedition, would be more cautious in their expansion. Spain's colonies would grow slower and concentrate around Florida, Central America, and Louisiana as Spain was more preoccupied with European Matters. Spain's North American colony grew into the Nation of Naranjia as a rival to the United States as it expanded further into the Deep South and Aridoamerica.
Back in Mesoamerica, The Triple Alliance would adopt more advanced weapons technology through Trade with England, France, the Ottomans, and Venice along with reverse engineering equipment left by the conquistadors. This would give that empire an advantage over the rest of Mesoamerica as they began to recover from the Columbian Exchange causing the Triple Alliance to expand into Most of Mesoamerica by the 18th century.
European Merchants and Missionaries would introduce Christianity into the region as a small, Christian minority developed in the Aztec Empire and the Yucatan that would be banned by the ruling class to preserve their social order. With the advent of the Enlightenment and further European influence, Aztec and Mayan society would undergo considerable change as practices such as Human sacrifice and slavery would fall out of favour, and constitutional, democratic rule would become adopted in the 19th century. The rise of nationalism would lead to the sudden fall of the Aztec Empire as nations that had been subjugated under the Triple Alliance for centuries revolted and seceded from the Empire. This also culminated in the unification of the Mayan states against the Nahua and the creation of Xalisco, A multi-ethnic federation made to overthrow Nahua rule.
Today, Mesoamerica remains one of the few bastions of Indigenous American culture as the Nahua and Mayab remain the two dominant powers in the region. Nahuatl is used as a lingua franca by the diverse array of cultures and nations within Mesoamerica due to the Nahua Confederacy's cultural dominance.
