While perusing a datasheet on improved MLRS rockets, I learned that such rockets can reach an apogee between 7 and 18 kilometers similar to cruise altitude for jet airplanes. This prompted me to convert an existing MLRS system into a short-range SAM system with minimal modifications. Primary detection is from a TV-based passive radar with thermal imaging for fine tracking. Once the booster is spent after 2-3 seconds, the warhead separates and glides to the target under IR guidance.
