The childhood of Lodo and Marco was anything but easy, marked by unequal expectations and a deeply dysfunctional family dynamic. As the elder of the two brothers, Marco was subjected to the strict, almost tyrannical demands of their father, Damo, from an early age. Whether Marco was naturally more sensitive or simply broke under the constant criticism and relentless pressure is difficult to determine. One thing, however, is clear: Lodo unwittingly contributed to Marco’s suffering.
While Marco was cast as the family's black sheep, Lodo was Damo's golden child. This conditional form of "fatherly love" seemed like a natural order to the brothers, twisted though it was. Lodo could do no wrong and was showered with praise, while Marco became the scapegoat, ridiculed and cast aside by his own family. This toxic dynamic cemented the growing distance between the two and inevitably led to a painful rift.
Eventually, Marco turned his back on the Gallo family, seeking his fortune in the wider world, far from Damo’s oppressive control. To Damo, Marco’s departure was nothing short of betrayal, and he made sure that Lodo saw his brother as a failed outcast. For decades, the two brothers had no contact whatsoever, and Marco’s life took a tragic turn.
He drifted between odd jobs in the restaurant industry but struggled to fit in due to his poor social skills. Eventually, he lost everything and ended up on the streets, penniless and broken.
One evening, fate took an unexpected turn. Lodo, who by then held a respected position in the Ministry thanks to Damo's influence, was strolling through the streets when he came across the disheveled, homeless Marco. The sight of his brother in such a pitiful state shook him to the core. Decades had passed, and Lodo, now wiser and no longer blind to Damo's manipulations, felt genuine compassion.
Driven by a desire to do the right thing, he approached Marco and offered him help. Marco’s distrust was understandable; the wounds of the past ran deep, and it seemed absurd to him that Lodo’s actions were motivated by pure kindness. Still, he reluctantly agreed to accept the offer.
Defying Damo’s explicit wishes, Lodo secured a position for Marco within the Ministry — though far from the public eye. As a gifted chef, Marco eventually found a place in the monastery kitchen, where, according to Damo, he was destined to peel potatoes in dark corners for the rest of his life. His true identity was kept secret to avoid any association with the Gallo family.
Yet despite these humiliations, something unexpected began to blossom between the brothers: the faint glimmer of a new beginning. Lodo made genuine efforts to regain Marco’s trust, and slowly, Marco began to open up — albeit in small steps. The past was far from resolved, and there was a long way to go before they could truly feel like brothers again.
But that fateful encounter in the alleyway offered them a chance — a chance both were determined to seize in their own way. And perhaps, just perhaps, something stronger than the scars of the past might one day grow from it.
