"Omni luci est umbra..."
The moon hung high, casting its cold light across the dark forest. The trees, twisted and ancient, whispered with the wind, as though they too were wary of the path ahead. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and pine, and the night felt alive with secrets, waiting to be uncovered.
Whisper moved silently between the shadows, her white fur barely visible under the moonlight. Her lavender eyes gleamed with focus, reflecting in the moonlight as she surveyed the dense forest ahead.
She was no stranger to the night. No stranger to the shadows.
Her target was close; she would arrive within the hour. The castle, dark and imposing, stood before her. The mission was simple: infiltrate the castle, eliminate the target, and leave before dawn.
The target, a corrupt nobleman with power far beyond what he should possess, was inside that castle. A man whose cruelty had poisoned the kingdom for years. Whisper’s orders were clear: end his reign...and his life.
But there was something off... a faint whisper tugging in the back of her mind, as though the mission itself were a trap.
The quiet clop of hooves cut through the silence, as Nyx, her horse, walked alongside her. While Whisper preferred to travel alone, time was of the essence for this mission. So she decided to bring a mount for a quick escape.
The air felt colder and heavier, as the castle came into full view. Her eyes narrowed: she could feel the weight of something…a presence…lurking in the distance.
Nyx obviously sensed it too, as it slowed its pace, ears twitching.
“What was that…?” Whisper murmured under her breath, only to be met with silence.
Nyx came to a stop just before the castle’s gates, its hooves silent against the stone path. Whisper dismounted with the fluid grace of a predator, her tail flicking behind her. She walked slowly toward the castle, her every step deliberate. She had come for a kill, but something gnawed at her-
The feeling that the shadows weren’t her allies tonight.
“I will be back soon…I hope. Stay here.” Whisper whispered to the horse, her voice barely audible.
Inside, the castle was dark, and the flickering torchlight seemed to mock the silence that permeated every stone. She could feel the walls pulse with a quiet, ominous energy.
The castle seemed empty. Too empty. No guards, no servants, no one wandering through the halls. Something was definitely off.
She took another step forward, her eyes darting to every shadow, every corner. Her ears flicked, picking up the faintest whisper, like a voice carried on the wind. But there was no one there.
“Whisper…”
The voice was soft, familiar, but it sent a shiver down her spine. Her eyes snapped to the darkness ahead, narrowing. A figure stepped from the shadows—a tall figure cloaked in black, his face obscured by a dark hood. His voice, though faint, cut through the silence again.
“You think you can just walk in here, lyolf?” His tone was smooth, almost mocking, “You think you can kill me without facing the consequences?”
Whisper drew out her katana in an instant, ready to fight her unknown adversary.
But something about him... something about his presence, felt off. This was not the target she had been sent for. This was NOT the nobleman.
The figure stepped forward, and the air seemed to thicken around him: his aura was so dark yet powerful. Magic was radiating from him-
And suddenly, the truth hit Whisper: she had walked right into a trap.
Before she could react, the figure lifted his hand, and the air around her shifted into dark, pulsing energy.
“You are not leaving this castle, little kunoichi,” he said, his voice cold as ice, “Not unless you can defeat me.” The castle seemed to groan around them as the ground beneath Whisper’s feet began to tremble.
And then the darkness closed in.
To be continued...
I have been playing too much WoW- so enjoy the fantasy-based story and artwork!
What should have been a “simple” mission turned into a trap- will Whisper escape? While Whisper is a master of most weapons and hand-to-hand combat, magic something she does not excel at- and apparently someone knows this all too well.
I had the pleasure of working with one of my favorite artists on this piece: :linkdrawingsofa. She always does a great job drawing my characters! Not to mention, I enjoy fantasy and rpg style video games and books, so I could not resist getting this done: thank you so much again~
