The "Burn Out" is where they heat up the tires before going into the chute, isn't it?

Yeah, it's used to warm up the tires and clean them of any debris that may have been picked up in the pit area before hitting the starting line.

You can't get many races out of a set of slicks, then? I had the impression maybe only a couple.

Most people don't do long burns, and the ones that do tend to get the thicker tires so they don't change them every month. From what I've heard pending on how well you do in the races most sets will last one season.

That's not so bad then. I've always been a little confused about slicks. Some seem to be fat and soft, but once they get spinning become bigger and narrower. But others don't seem to deform that much. I guess there are all kinds -- depending on the car or the driver.
