
This is the second piece I have for the AC art show. I did it first, but I gave it a higher number, so that makes it second. It's a pretty big canvas, 18x24, covered in silver leaf (imitation) and painted on with acrylic. The title loosely means Tales of the Foreigner, and I imagine this to be one of a series of pieces that were cut from the sliding door (fusuma) like those painted in Feudal Japan for Shoguns, Emperors and high ranking samurai. The picture doesn't do it justice, because it's a cheap camera with bad lighting taken hurridly as I tried to pack up to get these a ride to Pittsburgh.
I numbered this one 33 after Sanjusangendo, the thirtythree-bayed temple with the hundreds of gilt statues of the thousand armed buddha of mercy. It was such an unassuming (but long) building from outside, but so overwhelming to see inside. I'd love to go back and stare at it for a few more hours...
