I feel like I have fallen into the trap of having pretty flat lighting in a lot of what I render. That is good for reference images where I want to see the whole creature in its entirety, it lacks something in the actual look of the image. So, I wanted to try something both with a dynamic pose as well as natural, somewhat "dynamic" lighting. There are really only two primary light sources here (which you can actually see reflected in his eyes): A distant sun and a smaller key light to fill in one side of his face. On top of those are a few practical lights mainly filling in the background.

I'd say when it comes to rendering, there's a lot of detail between the quality of the textures, lighting, the intricate model geometry, and the advancements in newer render card post-processing techniques. So if it feels like it's missing something, it's probably in one of those areas.
However your lighting made the scales on the snake look much better than previous renders. Giving them a more natural sheen minus the glossy nose as a result of lost geometry. That being said this is an amazing shot and as a voreaphile this one shivers to think what slipping down that throat would feel like.
