I think what you heard was that Aladdin industries was sold to an investment group a decade ago and closed their US plants that made coolers and thermoses.
The lamp part was also spun off to a group that actually seem to have an affinity for the lamps, they've developed a new mantle that restores the performance that they had before the mantles were produced in the EU (EU made ones give off about 40 equivalent watts).
The Thorium ones (made in Brazil in the 70's) are still your best bet and still available from private resellers.
Plus they have dramatically improved the chimneys. The LOX-ON ones I just bought are better than the ones I have that are 25 years old.
