Real-world alchemy eventually led to modern chemistry (though admittedly a long and arduous path). When alchemy was prevalent, it focused upon both the transmutation of elements from a base to a perfected form (lead to gold, for a famously-known example), and the transmutation of the soul, from a base form to a perfected, noble one "closer to God and His angels".
Often, the elemental transmutation was used as a metaphor for the spiritual one, along with complex, obscure terms meant to be understood only by someone initiated into the mysteries.
Thus, seeing how transmutation was a key and critical concept in real-world alchemy, you can see how such a circle would be useful.

Indeed it is, and will remain so. Please be careful, as while an academic study of alchemy is alright, the experiments outlined in many alchemical texts are not safe whatsoever, and likely to get you arsenic poisoning, mercury poisoning, or worse. I strongly recommend caution and discretion be watchwords when looking into this ancient field that led to our modern understandings of chemistry and physics.

On a side note, here's a tidbit: Sir Isaac Newton was an alchemist, and there were many more who were also famous scientists.

I think that's what ya mean. I'm gonna test out some thing, and test out some plasmas... Mostly the plasmas. (Really deadly at High voltages)

What is real and what is just... fake is hard to say.

But be careful, it's hard to seperate what works from myth and legend.
