Faris Saeed Al-Saher was a cleric from the western land of Najar, raised into the church that all but controlled that country. Over twenty years of schooling under the church, learning the duties of a cleric of Mardock, the leader of the human pantheon of gods. His doubts grew over the years, however, as the man was kindhearted in nature, and the church often acted more as a boot over the people's necks, rather than a hand to help them.
At first, he found himself within a rebellious faction of the church, learning that the head of the pantheon, Mardock, had really just taken over and betrayed his father, Anu, for leadership of the gods. Then, seeing the truth finally, that both sides were the same evil under different names, he left the church forever. He walked away from his life, his family, and his country for good, traveling eastward into other countries. He ran, getting as far away from the church as he could, while also searching for some purpose in life, some way to do good with his life.
Just a few years later, Faris found himself somewhat happy in life, despite the dangerous circumstances he found himself in. Even having wandered his way into a war in a far-off country, he still found himself with a purpose, and with friends surrounding him. He'd discovered the truth behind the church of his birth, how they'd betrayed the first human gods, and how they used the souls of their followers for their own purposes. His mission now, under the patronage of Levaak, the original goddess of death and medicine, is to protect the souls of the departed, ensuring they are guided to the proper afterlife.
While the mistakes of the past haunt him every day, a weight on his soul that he fears he might not ever balance, he spends his days doing all he can to balance the scales, and to make sure his friends survive the battles to come.
A bit of a long explanation, but there is a lot of background to this character. With as much backstory and nuance as he has, Faris has quickly become one of my favorite D&D characters to play.
