I realize it's just an apple, and technically, it's not that great. But this is my first time doing a realistic painting in Photoshop. For years I've tried, and have always failed, and finally, I've done it!
Now to move onto flowers, copies of master paintings, portraits, animals, etc. Yayyy!

No moar apples goddammit! ;)
That came out pretty cool, it's more fun when you really start taking note of reflective light and such. If you have CS3 or higher, I really advise getting the Painter's Wheel because it makes you understand color choices.

I can't remember what version of Photoshop I've got, but the Painter Wheel sounds pretty good. Right now I'm working on a drawing in Paint Tool SAI, and they've got the Painters Wheel as their colour picker too. Just because I'm not smart, how does it help with understanding colour choices? Just because it makes you think about the colours in relation to each other?
Correct.
It's easier to find complimentary colors or color schemes with the wheel.
Also at least in the case of Painter when you need to learn certain terms the wheel makes it easier to understand.
The best way is to make sure you're in HSV mode.
Hue
Value
Saturation
Hue is the color. red/blue/etc... (This is the ring)
Saturation - how strong is that color (In Painter this slides left to right - furthest right is the highest point of saturation - the horizontal)
Value - how dark (or black) (This affects the up and down - vertical)
I kinda went into a critique about color here:

http://www.huevaluechroma.com/pics/9-8.png <--- this is a good example of Red at the highest saturation, but changing in value (it's black but there's a lot of red in that black).
It's also good to help create certain color schemes, you can see with this Gamut Mask tool - http://www.livepaintinglessons.com/gamutmask.php
I often get confused by the box photoshop has because I'm looking for compliments and other colors and Photoshop box thing just doesn't cut it.
Sai is also useful, but I always wonder why the box for HSV - the Triangle makes the most sense.
