The Exclusion Zone, despite all its dangers, is home to many research stations. The workers that occupy these bases have to be okay with venturing out into incredibly inhospitable areas. Someone has to do the experiments, and because of the zone's nature, organics are more reliable for long distance excursions, compared to machines.
