I read the original Collodi story, and the Fox and the Cat (as they were called) were non-anthropomorphic animals who wore no clothes. The Fox was a standard red fox and the Cat was a mackerel tabby. The story was supposed to have ended with those two hanging Pinocchio to kill him, but the editor said no, so Collodi continued the story.
