Freecycle scanner? Never heard of it... I'll look around and see what I can find. My boyfriend has a scanner sitting right next to his computer but it hasn't worked in a year. I'll try and tame it but if that doesn't work I will most certainly look into your suggestion

www.freecycle.org/ - it's a website where people advertise things that they don't want but are too good to go to landfill / tip . Everything advertised is free and not only saves you money but also means there is less waste of perfectly useable stuff ! You need to register first and can advertise 'WANTED' as well ... I've seen cars being asked for / given on there and have personally had computer gear and tvs etc. so well worth a look :)
Other than that , if you know someone who works in an office - they often have to pay to dispose of their old equipment when they update and are usually happy to give it away :)

re - the scanner / camera issue ... have you tried using a tripod on the camera so you can use a slower shutter , and use indirect light / daylight so it doesn't use flash ? < or if you don't have a tripod , just rest it on a table or something so it's steady and can use a slower shutter speed to get more detail in the image > Hope you get a scanner soon - they do make life a hell of a lot easier
