how exactly do you take infrared photos? i have a nikon d40 camera and i was just wondering how i could do this, or if it's the same as just inverting colors

I use an infrared filter, and Nikons are -excellent- for infrared. Much better than the camera I use. What lens do you have on your Nikon? Is it the 18-55mm?

Was this done with film? IR film? or a digital camera? Other then the infrared filter, did you have to play around with the camera's settings?
I was wondering what different colored filters in addition to the IR filter would do with the end result. :)

This was done with digital and a Hoyra infrared filter. Since the filter is completely red, I set a custom white balance to reduce as much of that as I can and produce more diverse color.

I've never tried using colored filters with IR, but it sounds like it could be interesting. ;) This camera is very difficult to shoot ir since it was designed to block infrared light. I'll give it a shot with a filter on film though!

The famous R72? Or any other filter?

R72! Although there are other brands out there, some better, some worse, I prefer this one overall. My only issue is keeping the thing clean! It's multilayered, and you really need a lenspen to clean finger prints and smudges off of it.

it took me a while to realize that the train wasn't in fact moving. :) The speed of the clouds transfers to the black rotten trains quite well.

I really don't have any secrets. The art behind photography is much less the step by step instruction rather than the creative eye behind the camera. I used a Hoya R72 infrared filter on my camera, and set a custom white balance.

If you can save up, go with Hoya (R72.) And IR film is a tough go. Worth a try though! Just find a good lab.
