Yog-Sothoth (Lovecraft and Anthropomorphized vers.)
“Yog-Sothoth knows the gate. Yog-Sothoth is the gate. Yog-Sothoth is the key and guardian of the gate. Past, present, future, all are one in Yog-Sothoth. He knows where the Old Ones broke through of old, and where They shall break through again. He knows where They have trod earth’s fields, and where They still tread them, and why no one can behold Them as They tread.”~The Dunwich Horror; H. P. LovecraftYog-Sothoth is among the most powerful gods in The Cthulhu Mythos and one of my favorites. While on one occasion of being a villain in Lovecraft’s The Dunwich Horror, he is portrayed as a benevolent deity in Through the Gates of the Silver Key. He is, in my opinion, a chaotic neutral being who doesn’t and does care about humanity in some aspect.
Yog-Sothoth, in his appearance in two stories, is described as a gigantic protoplasmic being with a mixture of iridescent orbs and tentacles. There are various illustrations of this powerful being, some of which have mouths or eyes, all of which are fantastic. How I illustrate him in the two sketches versus how he is described briefly in “The Horror in The Museum” and “The Lurker at The Threshold.”
On the top left is Yog-Sothoth, based on the writings of Lovecraft with the collaboration of Hazel Heald and August Derleth’s “The Lurker at The Threshold,” which was inspired by fragments from the late author.
On the top right is my depiction of Yog-Sothoth as an amorphous thing with black eyes and (though not in color) blue irises. The eyes are represented as black holes or white holes as he is the opener of the way, the embodiment of time and space. Finally, at the bottom is Yog-Sothoth, an anthropomorphized version of him as an amalgamation of bull, wolf, and other creatures.
