It was a cold day but tourists were plentiful in Königsplatz. Klara and Maximilian stood watching people as they passed. The breeze added chill but the sun warmed the skin.
“And so,” Maximilian rambled, “The other elements affect the physical world, all except Mirror, which is the purest of the Mind arts. Our element is a hybrid of both physical and mental art, but still mainly within the mind.”
“I do not understand, then,” Klara replied, “I could feel the door you made, and the key was there and not at the same time.”
“They were there because you believed they were there. Should someone throw a stone, it would pass through. Should someone stumble and fall, they would fall through. Should someone not be aware of the barrier, it would have no effect. The laws of physics still apply, it is the laws of perception that have been set aside.”
Klara nodded, “This is why we practiced the arts of the mime?”
“Indeed. Here comes some tourists, go, make a wall as I showed you.”
Klara stepped into the path and mock bumped into a wall. She made an exaggerated show of rubbing her nose, then began exploring the imaginary surface. She felt a ripple through her fingertips and the physical sensation through her hands.
The gaggle of tourists stopped to observe, a child with them giggled. Klara, dipped down and knocked on the wall, a sound rang out clear, startling the adults.
The child ran forward with eyes full of wonder and pressed up against the wall, nose depressing against the unreal surface.
Klara pointed to the ground and the child looked down, knelt and picked up an imaginary key.
Klara smiled wide and nodded, and pointed to the wall. The child slipped the key into the wall and twisted it. Klara made an exaggerated show of opening the door for the child to pass through.
Photographs were taken with the tourists, and they continued on with the child stopping once to wave bye bye again.
And then Klara and Maximilian were again alone in their corner of the platz.
“Very well done, Klara.”
