What this looked like when I found it abandoned.

I've done three chemical strip jobs to this cabinet and now have started lots of hand sanding of the wood. I put a little bit of Danish Oil on it tonight to see how my initial sanding is going. I have beverage glass stains on the top that will require careful work to remove and scrapes and gouges that will need filling and sanding. Overall I'd say it's looking quite beautiful IMHO. I'll continue the sanding along the 'wrapped around' sides tomorrow once I have enough sunlight to work with, hopefully by tomorrow evening I'll start the several day process of applying the Danish Oil until the wood will soak up nothing more. Then a few coats of real Shellac.
I'm leaning toward replacing the grill cloth, I have an exact match for the pattern from (Link gone) though they certainly want a bundle for this short run cloth. The original cloth is intact, but sun faded. When I removed it you could see along the edges; where it was protected, how much of the gold sheen the cloth has lost.

WOW it's looking awesome! <3 A shame they painted it over but I guess that was the fashion at the time it was done, real wood looking old-fashioned and the whole modernization effect. They might have tossed it under the idea that it was probably too much work to restore, or didn't know (or care) what they had. Glad you get to enjoy some time working with it.
I used to have an old "The Fisher" high-end console stereo that sounded *amazing*, even with one channel out.
