Possums tend to come in two varieties, friendly and pissed off. It seems they seldom go for moderation, but she is a beautiful example of her kind. I love her face and gloved feet. :)

I've thought of raising them before. But rabies and stuff always put me off.

I used to have a wild cotton tail rabbit. That made a better pet then my current store bought tame rabbit.

Except that the wild rabbit had a more oily coat and smelled much much stronger due to the oils.

I liek wild pets better. Its much more rewarding to have them love you.

Some of them can for sure make a statement. Like if you raised a baby bird and then let it fly and land on you. Live in your house.

I used to try to raise tons when I was younger, but didn't go well. (Didn't have the internet to tell me what to do back then)

Wild turtles, found a wild hermit crab (Thought they were suppose to be under water always), found these small land crabs, I've also seen those white beach crabs that are fast as lightning and next to impossible to catch, found goose eggs, had a baby bird before. Caught a humming bird before, but knew I didn't have the stuff to raise it. Caught an adult bird before that couldn't fly for more then half a minute, tons of fish (But I didn't try to raise any wild ones).

Ant farms and insects too

I've been tempted before to try and raise a regular crab.

My neighbors have dogs so they scare away all the wild life which really sucks. Cats are sometimes around too. One person I know gets regular visits from a raccoon and other says they've seen something like a bob cat. Used to hear stores of one person that had a deer as a pet.

Opossums tend to be relatively rabies-free despite getting bitten a lot. The rabies virus must not have a taste for marsupials. Animals captured from the wild will almost always have 'something' so definitely be careful. Also -- if you live in an area with horses you'll want to keep opossums out of there -- they can carry Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM).

From what I read opossums don't make very good pets. They're kinda smelly and don't 'train' very well. If this critter is a rescue case I'd recommend just taking good care of it until it's better and set it free.

Not true actually. There have been cases where the rabies virus was found in oppies, though rare.

I will have to agree with Neikrad though in that they aren't meant to be pets.

Sorry :P I didn't mean they don't carry it, more so that it is rare. When they do, they rarely are affected by it themselve's, which I guess could be more dangerous because they could carry && you wouldn't know. But she is a wonderful little girl.
