I know, Mucha was Czech, not Itallian. I wanted the title in italian.
Full description and detail shots to come in a journal entry later. I'll link it to here, and vice versa... I'm running really late and I need to get going. :(
Oh...
and...
I lose at life. *points to her art*

I wanted to create a goddess. Something that would represent me. Ebon and Mievzar, my charachters, are me. Miev is my soul. He is the true me. The wise me. The melancholy me. Ebon is the physical day-to-day me. Plain, curvy, quiet, understated, a little shy... but even every-day me feels like a goddess now and then. This is a representation of that: what the mare could be if she only loved herself all the time.
Why Mucha? I never used to like his work, but recently it strikes a chord. The colors are so rich, and the style is superb, but what gets me are the women. They are so full of joy, composure, self-assurance. They're sensual, flehsy, floating spirits. There's a lot in common with another of my favourite artists--Yoshitaka Amano and his floating women.
So I thought... what better way to represent me as a goddess than with Mucha as my guide? And a bit of anthro action, of course... some of the best gods and goddesses come straight from egyptian and pagan lore. ;)
Now lessee...
We have BLACK - for power, elegance, strenght, authority. it's the color you use as a background to let others stand out (me, in a lot of ways). it's the unknown.
the HORSE is a symbol of nature, feminine. a black horse is a representation of a darker/hidden side that wants more. consciousness. horses are associated with divinatination, clairvoyance, compassion, and the total soul's journey.
the TIGER LILY is for pride--i need to take more pride in my art.
STARS are a sign of hope. the psyche. the part of the personality that survives death.
There are SEVEN stars in the sky, and 7 on her headdress. Seven is the number of the philosopher, the sage, the wisdom seeker. reserved, stoic, comtemplative deep-thinker. the esoteric, the exotic, the ethereal. an enigma. seven is associated with the astrological sign, Libra. which is what I happen to be. ;p
the MOON is the feminine principal. she is growth, regeneration, healing, nourishment and protection. she is the emotional side of personality.
BLUE is the color of thought. it is derived from a root that signifies perfection. it is peace, stability, melancholy, loyalty, faith, wisdom, and tranquility. it is also associated with the 5th Chakra of expression.
INDIGO is intuition, spirituality, imagination and understanding.
SO! That's the long symbolism of it all. It's a personal piece, and I'm happy with how it's come out. I hope that you like it too!

This is a magnificent piece of work. I'm greatly intrigued by the clarity of color. I'm guessing you used colored pencil, wax rather than pastel? Not sure about the paper but it has a very intriguing texture. I've seen quite a bit of mucha-inspired artwork, and much of it confines itself to the paler tones that prevailed at the time. It's neat to see a similar rendering with such luminosity and richness of color. Also appreciated your sharing your personal thoughts and symbology on the work.
Wonderful.
Wonderful.
I'm not sure how to respond. *laughs* I really and truly appreciate the level of consideration you've put into your comment. I'm flattered! Then again, maybe I'm odd. ;o)
I used Prismaclor pencils on a large (19inx24in)sheet of vellum bristol paper. I think any texturing is a consequence of the way I layer colors. I start with a lightly 'shaded' base coat of color, and then build up on top of it with lighter, or darker shades with equally light layers, or heavier layers. I'm not sure that makes sense... but I like the depth/blending it creates.
Though, to be candid--not that much thought goes into it while I'm applying those layers. It's all just flow, and so-on. Sometimes it works, other times it falls flat on it's face. Or my face. Heh.
For instance... I loathe the trees and sky behind the mare. I think, at that point, I rushed. I had gotten everything else done, and I pushed myself through the last little bit instead of taking the time it deserved. Ohhhhh welllll. Live and learn. Bwaha.
Thanks again, though! I'm really glad you like it. :o)

Stunning. I am also interested in the media you used. I have almost exlusivly used pastels for the color and texture, but have been a little dissatsified with them. I have just started playing with modern color penciles. I could use all the advise I can get on other media choices.
As I was just typing to Zjonni, I use Prismacolor pencils, typically on Vellum Bristol paper of various sizes. I love bristol for it's thickness, smoothness, and the fact that I can slap several different media on it for one piece, and the paper holds up. :oD
But, I layer my colors. I start with a light base, and then layer over top of it. Sometimes only 2 layers, other times, I'll go over the same piece of the paper 5or more times. But, there's no magic formula, really. It's all just luck, and flow, and what feels right/looks right at the time. It's a lot of fun (or so I think)you should try it!
Hopefully that helps!
And thank you so much for the comment, and taking the time to stop by. :oD

Thanks. That helps quit a bit. I have been playing around with a little 24 color Prismacolor set on charcoal paper. I just bought a vellum bristol pad a few days ago. I haven't had the time to experiment with it yet. Now I'm all gung ho to get started ... hmm I wonder if my boss will miss me if I don't show up ?
And I'm really flattered by that.
I really wish I had the time to work on more things like this... unfortunately I finished this while unemployed--perfect for coloring hours on end.
Booo life and needing to eat. :(
But thank you, again, you have no idea how much it means to me that this piece helps to inspire you. I think that has to be one of the highest compliments I could ever receive.
