More of a collage of stuff, as well as an explanation. The picture on the left is just a year or so old. It's when I used to be in the military (long story, I served my term, honorable, yadda yadda). I was so afraid due to what I was doing in the military to post pics of me on line. Now? I don't care.
The one in the middle is a picture cropped from the badge I got taken by
likeshine at FWA. It's so far one of the closest renditions of Sjach that I've seen (at least of hair length, etc, in relation to my face).
The picture on the right is me today. Ignore the harrowing look. It was late and my foot's been bothering me.
ANYWHO
What I've been trying to obtain is hair length similar to my fursona so that when I pick up fursuiting, I can do a very minimized suit (dye hair, built out face, etc). What I"m looking for is: Does it look close? My banes are swept to the side, but it wouldn't be hard to push it similar to the front, but to the side it looks more like the rendition of
faint's picture.
But now... I'm wondering if I should go back to short hair or not? I like my long hair, but just wondering what people's opinion's are. Some I've already asked, and I tend to get this non-chalant answer of 'whatever makes you happy'. That's not what I'm looking for here. Not looking for pros and cons of short hair vs long hair. I'm just trying to decide if I go with long hair or short. Which looks better on me?
In both of these pictures it's been a short time since I last shaved, so hopefully the 2oclock shadow isn't too much of a throw-off. To be tossed into scraps later.
PS: The long hair is a work in progress, tips on what can be done to get my hair more 'Sjach Like' would be appreciated, but is not the focus of this. If the long hair does not look good for my face, then I might have to go with a short hair with wig for my fursuiting, so this roughly revolves around a fursuit in the making, I suppose.

As someone who has had both long and short hair before, perhaps I could be of some assistance. :P
While I think I prefer the shorter hair, it's probably just what I'm used to seeing you with. The long hair doesn't look bad in the least, it's just different. Let's take it this way: Could you imagine me with long hair?
That being said, I think i have some tips on how to make the hair look better/how to get your hair more accurate to your character:
*Aside from the bangs, most of Sjach's hair is between the horns, giving him a bit of a cleaner look. Try pushing your hair back behind your ears or shoulders or something. Odds are some strands will flop out, but let them do that naturally.
*Never underestimate the power of the ponytail. Try tying back your hair with a black hairband or ribbon but leave the bangs free. That would give you a bit of a colonial look, I would imagine, for when you're not fursuiting.
*It looks like your hair has a natural wave to it similar to your Sjach's. One thing that throws it off is that your hair at the ends goes inward, towards your face, while your character's goes outwards. Let it grow a bit longer and it should start going the other way again.
Try out these suggestions. If you're having issues, you should still have my number (Oh geez, that was YEARS ago, I think). You can always drop me a line or somethin' and we'll figure somethin' out.

Number One: KEEP IT LONG. KEEP IT LONG. KEEP IT LONG, I BEG OF YOU!!!! I don't see you often, but one of my joys as your wuffie is running my hands though your hair. I love how you look with long hair. You don't look sixteen, and I don't get accused of being a pedo for dating you.
Number Two: Your hair is not quite as long as Sjach's. It takes a length about six inches more than you have to get the flip out and look that you want. Lin's is just now doing it, and it's halfway down her back.
Number Three: Sjach has a natural peak to his bangs because he has a hairline you don't. And horns. That CAN be sculpted into hair, but it has to be METICULOUSLY managed or it looks like crap on a cracker.
Number Four: If his hair is as pictured in practically all his artwork appearances (save, of course, faint's), he has long, shaggy layers in his hair, asymmetrically balanced. He does not have shaggy hair alone, he also has layers. This may be something you wish to consider. If all else fails, take a picture of Sjach to the hairdresser and tell them, 'make it look like this'. If faint's work is the work you want to go by, just grow it out longer and it WILL take on that 'shaggy, barely kempt' look. Important: having thick, wild hair is not a license not to trim or take care of it. Sjach may be a street draggie, that doesn't mean you are.
Also, try using some pomade to lift the roots in random places to give it that "slept in" look.
Number Five: Sjach's bangs go halfway down his nose. Which means that when left down, they would cover his eyes if they were not swept to the side. The forelock bangs look is classic, but again, MUST BE MAINTAINED.
For a street urchin, he sure has a high-maintenance look. ;)
DISCLAIMER- My opinions are just that- my opinions. My advice has no basis more reliable than my own experience.
The easiest thing would be to have a dedicated wig custom made for this fursuit, but I personally think that going the extra distance to make your suit a part of you is admirable in the extreme. Also, do you want me to make a more accurate costume for you? I know you weren't particularly satisfied with the one we made. Rather, I think I could do better. Let me know.
