Kha'eshan Bestiary: Quilled Bawk
The Quilled Bawk is one of the more common flightless birds inhabiting Eastern Eruth's grasslands. Being fairly large, it is a prized game bird, with one individual being able to provide food for an entire family. Hunting Bawks is, however, limited to the end of the dry season and after the birds have concluded their mating season. By then, the strongest and fittest males are already coupled with their females and ready to raise chicks. Individuals that have not found mates and lost territorial bouts are a prime target for hunters.
Quilled Bawks feed on a variety of grasses, herbs, and seeds. The latter sometimes leads to conflicts with people, specifically when one or more birds discover a grain field. In that instance, the Bawks become a nuisance and need to be chased away (to reiterate: these birds are only hunted during a specific time of year, and only unsuccessful individuals are targeted; outside of that, hunting these birds is seen as a taboo).
Male Bawks can be easily distinguished from females by their vibrant and colorful plumage and prominent throat sacks. All these features are used in mating displays, with the most colorful males typically being the most successful. Females are typically brownish-grey, making it easier to hide among the grasses when brooding.
By nature, Bawks are curious birds and seem aware of their protected status during most of the year. As such, they tolerate the presence of humans.
