Well you have to consider most fursuit makers build suits for a living. It's their only job. They have to take into account a wide variety of bills, like mortgage/rent, health insurance, dental, electricity, heat, water, food, the list goes on. And on top of that they HAVE to make some kind of profit so they can live a decent life. So over all, $2000+ is very understandable.
You are not alone in that observation. I have seen people ruin great suits by just standing around in them, and I have seen people totally redeem some pretty janky home-made work by getting TOTALLY into the character and making it play by force of will. Having a nice suit is a definite bonus, but it rests just as much with the performer to pull off the SoD.
I agree. I've seen it more than once, and the way a character is played has even totally changed my perception of the suit. Just catching a glance of it or seeing pictures and I'd go "Eh it's okay I guess." But then seeing the same suit played and suddenly I'm in love with it. XD And on the flipside I've seen once-adorable-looking suits suddenly become creepy when all the wearer does is stand quietly and adopt that dead-eyed stare suits are so capable of. o_o
the dead eye stare......creepy.
thing about suits it just a costume. you got to know what works with the suit. some suits look creepy doing something while other look cute doing that thing. if you want to get the character just right you really should spend time in front of a mirror (web cam works as well) experimenting. you got to remember as soon as you put on a fursuit you are an entertainer. as such you must also remember that suits are just boring lumps of fabric sewn together to look like something recognizable, and it takes you wearing the suit to give it life, but even then that is not enough. you have to exaggerate your movements, who wants to see a fursuit do the "hi ~little wave~ " when they should have done the "hi hello ~bouncing like a crazy fool waving", well it depends on the character, but still make your movements big. (i mean which would you run up to hug?)
my opinion is that when in suit, you throw your normal actions out the window, just let the suit become a second skin. just don't stand, don't just walk, make it like you were meeting a friend that you hadn't seen in years, and your all excited.

I sincerely hope you're joking. Also, there's nothing elite about owning a suit. It just means you have more money to spend than others or you have skill to make them yourself or you have skewed priorities and spend money badly.
The entire idea of this piece is to make fun of the way that buying an expensive name-brand fursuit seems to make you instantly "popular" for no real reason other than the fact that you own an expensive costume. It's somewhat sarcastic/negative commentary on what is, in my opinion, stupidity and the weird, pseudo class system involving fursuit owners that too many people seem to think exists in this fandom.
Just thought I'd explain that because I'm not entirely sure you got it.

No I got it. I was also trying to be a little humorous or tongue in cheek myself on some of the odd or perhaps hallow exclusivity that is based around a fursuit. It's why I actually like this piece because it perfectly illustrates what you mentioned.
The reference to the dance competition is just another example of how silly it can be at cons. namely that you aren't allowed to participate in competing with dance unless you own a suit (there's no non-suit dance comp). There's 'many' examples of that.

Your point is valid. Dance competitions are an example which does not necessarily reflect the 'suit = popularity so you get to do this thing' factor which is quite unfortunate for the non-suiters.
There are however situations at conventions by the attendees such as room parties etc. that may actually prove the point of the picture (see the character offering a party invite for example!)

It's sad how true this is. I've seen people who have the personality of a beanpole have people dying to be their "furiends." And a lot of these people are what my friends and I refer to as "walking coat racks."
A friend and I were at a party in suit people were yelling his name from afar. He whispered over to me, "None of these people would even know who I am if I didn't have this suit on. Let's get out of here"

Heh, I've yet to go to a con or anything, but I imagine that's a common thing, isn't it? x.x If I ever go to a con, I intend on talking to folks that suit if/when I can be around them outside of the suit. I wanna know the people behind the suit, not their characters, you know? I mean I hardly get to see anybody around where I live, furry or not, so hell, I'm talking to the people outside their suits if I ever get the chance to be at a con. :p
FCN's where I intend to go next year. I'm close, but not close enough to get there without transportation. Like I said, I dunno any locals that woulda been willing to take me there when it was going on (I only know one in my town), and buses don't seem to exist in my area of town. SOL till then, I suppose? :P Well, I think I've gone off topic now, bleh.

I don't understand the whole spending $2500+ on a costume either. The instances in which it makes sense (in my head, anyway) is when it's a school/business/organization buying a professional mascot costume to promote their cause and entertain their customers. To be honest I'd much rather put a down payment on a nice used car than run around in an animal costume with other people in animal costumes, haha.
To each his own, I guess.

I've run down the costs for the supplies I get for a toony suit. Taking time and labor out, supplies for a full suit run anywhere from 150-225$. Then again, I drive to a fabric district where I can haggle prices C: Not to say anything bad about a professionally made suit, but when you look at some of the costs most of the money goes to labor(with some suits, it's understandable). It's just an interesting concept IMO.
It's easy to say that you could make a toony suit for insert-cheap-price but once you start getting into the really nice furs (the ones any good maker is going to use) you can get into the $40-$50/yd range and above. And most people don't have access to any decent local furs (so jealous of you XD) so we're forced to pay anywhere from $20/yd up plus shipping to get it online. And foam's not exactly cheap, either. And if you've got a character with multiple colors that means buying more fur and having a lot of extra since it's hard to accurately judge which means even MORE money out of pocket. XD I made my boyfriend's bodysuit and feet and it was $200 in fur alone. And he'd already had the head, hands, and tail done. o__o
Of course a vast majority of the price goes into the labor, yeah. But that's how art is. When things are one of a kind and hand-made they're generally expensive as hell. Check out any Renaissance Faire where vendors hand-make chain mail armor or leather boots. The prices seem outrageous. And prices always get even higher for custom objects, which fursuits are.
When it comes to buying that's just priorities/funds. Personally there's not a lot of stuff I like to buy. I don't go clothes shopping or buy movies or many videogames or whatever. It could easily be compared to people who collect things like movie memorabilia or some such. They spend their disposable income on it because that's what they enjoy, even though the rest of us don't really get it. Psh, at least I get to wear my expensive thing. XD
tl;dr I got on a tangent apparently. Sorry, sorry.

You've read my mind. I've been thinking the same ever since I got on Twitter and could more easily see tweets pertaining to "I'm getting a suit" or "I'm at AC getting in suit for x, y, z, suit related activities" Like, if I'm ever going to be spending that amount of money on anything, it has to have some kind of practical use to me. Like you said, a down payment on a car. Been saving for that myself. Got a fairly decent amount set aside right now. Took a little over a year and a lot of living under a rock to do it, but it's been worth it.
Hope you enjoy your car when you get it! I'm saving up for a van myself.
I know of a fursuit maker whose heads alone usually run over $1000 and I'm like. Wow. If I spend that much money on something do you think I'd want to wear it and sweat in it! Hell no! I'd put it in a glass case where nothing can happen to it! XD

That's because people who sell full suits for less than $1000 are usually newer at it, so chances are they are of low quality.
How long have you been making suits and how many have you made? You might want to raise your prices ever so slightly. I also operate a mascot/fursuit making business and the cheapest full you'll get from me is $900 for, like, and all-white dog or something.

This is relevant to my interests, and is still valid a year on (and I'm sure for many years to come)
I also find it funny... since non-suiters aren't allowed in the fursuit lounge, when you get changed out of your "popu-fursuit" you're instantly invisable to the people who talked to you during your fursuit performance xD
(unless you speak in fursuit, or are a certain body type/size, then that's not the case)

I only just recently took an interest in fursuiting, if only to be able to bring life to my character/ fursona, and hopefully have some fun doing it. But knowing this IS the sad truth behind most of furrydom, it slightly pisses me off, and makes me not want it quite so much any more..
