I originally conceived of Sima as a bard who evoked her magic mostly through dancing, so her choice of musical instrument was meant to be small and unobtrusive (so, a tambourine). But then I had her taking lessons from Sheila Mackinley, one of my world's resident archmages, and thought she should have something else, something with a little more presence. So, a guitar, but I also wanted to emphasize the magic aspect. And now she has a combined guitar/magic staff.
