A few months ago, strange curious little creatures started to show up around the world, at first being considered as pests but then later being treated as fun little fellas to use as stress relief since they discovered that they can't be harm by squishing it and being kind of cute too, usually if you find many of them around it's guaranteed for you to have a good and unstressed day, trying to keep them were impossible since they always find a way to escape, so the best option is if you find some grab them, play with them and then let them leave at their own, maybe in that way it might have a chance for them to come back again.

Zootopia but the secret is it's really our world in the far future after humanity was stricken with a virus that shrinks us but causes other mammals to hyper evolved
Centuries later humanity is long forgotten and instead remembered as strange insects that seem almost intelligent at times but no one thinks their worth researching so no one knows or cares

Similar idea; perhaps human civilization is on the cusp of achieving the vaunted civilizational milestone of becoming an advanced space fairing civilization when some meteor crash lands on Earth, releasing some sentient, hivemind mutagenic life form that mutates species into larger, stronger, more energy efficient versions of themselves. Perhaps this was created to ward off some cosmic threat to life across the universe by evolving it to be immune/above this threat, not considering the effect this may have on existing sentient beings. Mixing and matching DNA of both Earth species and adding alien biology. Humanity retreats into air tight bunkers to be put into stasis to wait out the unstable chaos of this rapid evolution. When they emerge they find not an 'empty', stable wilderness ecosystem of mutated creatures, but that they've been ~replaced~. They've missed their chance to join other civilizations in the stars on their own feet, making a name for themselves. These gigantic macros have already taken that title. This planet is not "Earth, home to humanity" but is known by another name and for a very different set of inhabitants. Insult to injury, in a world where alien life forms and previously unknown mutants are discovered all the time, barely any attention is paid to humanity's emergence. Simply another tiny creature scurrying down by their paws.
