They are the pirates, Shimmering and Larry. Normally they sail the seas of Dana's planet, in the care (spiritually) of her mother Dana Romates.

Shimmering and Larry are Linette and Swift's cousins.

The line in the center is an ancient space elevator that a previous civilization had built and what is on the right is a stellar-mass black hole with stable and distant orbit.
