Male and female-specialized baxxid actually sound identical by default, but almost every single one trains their voice to be lower or higher in order to mimic human male or female vocal characteristics, and to be recognizable as male or female when speaking.

Nice that you use Kal's unique speech-pattern to characterize both his species and him as an individual. And Baxxid can 'bio-specialize' on personal choice to be male, female, or 'both'? Love it!
I really like how Kass bends his head back in panel 2. And his casual nonchalance in acknowledging his changes.

Ran's study suggests they're born unsexed, not ungendered. If accurate, they're born null, only developing hidden sexual traits once "certain conditions" have been met.
The Baxxid he was interviewing all politely declined to offer any further explanation though, so perhaps his information was simply lacking, out of his own polite refusal to pry.

They're probably like some human societies, for example some Native American ones, in which there are three acknowledged genders: male, female, and two-spirit/nadle/yougettheidea. All three have roles and duties specific to them, and all three can marry any one of the other two. So, I imagine baxxid who don't specialize into male or female tend to specialize into this third gender, which to human eyes, might appear not specialized.
that spontaneous moment of him suddenly realizing "wait, she said was human, WAIT I'm talking to a Yinglet...WHAT!?!"
This is the kind of blundering step someone with an extremely fast mental processing capacity would absolutely do. I often see baxxid doing something and just feel kindship to the gigantic pistol shrimp lol

Honestly love this, a member of a species who have a fluid and semi-self determined view on both internal and biological sex and gender who has almost certainly had to learn to respect and understand the more static and ingrained nature of sex in other species... suddenly being thrown the curve ball of, "Actually, I'm trans... but not voluntarily and in a way that even I don't fully grasp."
Like the gender equivalent of learning to speak Spanish fluently so you can better communicate at your new job in Mexico only to learn that they recently replaced the whole staff with native Icelandic speakers.

-Lopin's a feminine cismale Yinglet
-Elim's a cismale Human
-Ran's a cismale Human
-Isher is a female of unidentified heritage (suspiciously bone-worm like fixtures upon her though!)
-Yannit is a female of a foreign species (Indrel)
-Kass is a trans-species trans-sex male-human to female-Yinglet.
Isher and Yannit's unique species may make them a point of curiosity, but I doubt Kalkgur would have the same confusion as with Kass.

And even while the surface dwellers of Val Salia do not have the concept of trans, if Baxxid can specialize in "both" and decide upon their gender, it's far more reasonable for them to at least understand the potential of somebody not caring which pronouns are used, if not full trans understanding.
There have been discussions all over the place, here, Discord, 4Chan, DA and probably other places as well. If I remember correctly Val has said that the Baxxid are biologically true hermaphrodites and are very similar functionally to terrestrial mollusks like slugs and snails (without the calcium "love darts"). When Baxxid like Kalgkur choose a specific gender role, as a general rule the reproductive organs of the gender they didn't choose atrophy and they become effectively and functionally fully male or female. From what Kass says here, there are also Baxxid who chose to remain both.
Ha! I had a feeling there may have been something more to Baxxid sexes. Interesting that Kass did his research on that beyond the regional guides, which didn't mention voices. Indicates more specific interactions with the Baxxid, perhaps even more than Ran had?
Maybe I'm reading to much into it, but Kass hasn't corrected/ asked Kalgkur to use "sir" instead of "ma'am" during this conversation whereas Kass asked Jal the lift operator specifically to use "sir." Of course the exchange with Jal was weeks ago now. Kass may have made a decision regarding pronouns as well as gender identity during the time skip that we're about to learn about.
Oy, OOPsites! I'm here to remind you once again that there's a place called "Top Web Comics" https://www.topwebcomics.com/?home=3 that compiles comics from various places. There's a bunch of cool stuff there. They have monthly votes, so you can support OOPs there. You can vote once a day per device, so your PC, laptop, tablet, phone, etc.
I've noticed that you can sometimes even get in extra votes from different IP addresses, or if you're disconnected from your IP and open up again later.
It closed out last month at 12427 votes and 73rd place. It's currently at 8721 votes and 32nd place. The highest it's reached is 36th place, and the top vote getters seem to end up with something close to 60,000 votes, at least recently.
Vote early, vote often! Help OOPs get noticed!

I'll repeat my comment on this from last time:
"The numbers at TWC have gotten very strange recently. Hundreds of votes have been showing up suddenly every day, and the rankings throughout a day have been going radically up and down. I recently noticed that this is just confined to the comics in the top 100.
This is making the numbers and rankings pretty meaningless, and is really unfair to any comic not in the top 100. It also makes it a complete crapshoot where the comics end up at the end of the month. I haven't been able to find out what's going on with this."

Sounds more like hermaphrodites that, likely through hormonal things they can somehow change themselves, can turn off enough of one sex to... basically become infertile regarding one aspect. Making them fully male or female, since gamete production IS how sex is defined in biological terms. Which is something real animals do sometimes, actually! Many fish, for example, will change their sex depending on environmental triggers.
The idea of a species with no set biological sex seeing gender almost exclusively as a social role that you pick like a college major is super fascinating, and the more worldbuilding that comes up for each species the more convinced I am that you could probably write a book for each individual species in this comic and every single one would be interesting all the way through
I like how Kass fully discloses with Kalgkur that he was once human, and so casually, too. He might as well if Kalgkur is gonna be his personal gaurd.
I can't help but how many people do know. Elim, Isher, Yannit, Felsa, and one unamed Dinnish Bunkmate were the only ones to witness his transformation in person. Galen was right outside and realized soon after. Viracroix immediately believed it through his own suspicions, and Ran essentially believed it just as well. Vizlet eventually fgiured it out by how little Kass knows anything about yinglets (specifically his sleep schedule). Narklet might know but there's no way knowing if he knows. Beizel sussed it out in his own ways. Head Surgeon Murrs had an inclination, which Kass confirmed to him. And now Kass just told Kalgkur straight up.
Honestly, it wouldn't surprise mr if there was a rumor going on around Ivenmoth that Kass was once human. Just depending on what one person might overhear and then tells the next. But also, as Murrs had said: there was once a human by the name of Kassen Akoll who suddenly disappeared and now there's a yinglet going by the same name. How intriguing.
