WARNING: SPOILERS FOR WARFRAME AHEAD!!!
In a universe similar and yet different to our own, the year is 1999, and the majority of the world is eagerly anticipating the turnover of the calendar to the new millennium. But in the city-state of Höllvania, a crisis has been brewing, as the military arm of the nation, the Scaldra, has taken control of the government to deal with a mysterious infection that consumes both organic and technological matter alike to create a horrible fusion of the two. This disease, the Techrot, has spread malignantly under the surface of the city, while the forces of the Scaldra have been barely able to fight back above the surface, with orders to shoot to kill anything hostile.
It is in this chaotic environment that a man has arrived from the far future, where the embers of a crumbling space empire are scattered and fought over. This scientist, Albrecht Entrati, flees a threat that might have followed him to this timeline, and has used his mastery of many disciplines to create a third faction to fight against the Techrot and the Scaldra. By utilizing a special technology on those infected with the Techrot, Entrati has warped people into hybrids of human and Warframes, a type of semi-autonomous weapons platform from his future. These half-Warframes, or "Protoframes", have rebelled against him, at which point he imprisoned them within a time loop of New Year's Eve, 1999, when Höllvania is wiped off of the map by its nuclear reactor going critical.
Yet others have time traveled back to 1999 as well and broken open the time loop to allow the initial wave of Protoframes to potentially escape from their endless cycle of death and agony. This is something that Entrati cannot allow, as it draws further attention to him from those he seeks to hide from, and so, he has created more Protoframes that might be more amenable to help him, or at least a thorn in the side of the Protoframes that keep gathering together against him. In his searches, he discovered a young woman, the daughter of two nations, who came to Höllvania to settle a personal grudge against the first Protoframe that Entrati ever created, but was infected by the Techrot before she could enact her plan of revenge.
Her name is Rosalie Takao, her father a salaryman from the Republic of Zipangu, and her mother a passionate politician from the Commonwealth of Eire, the latter of which she grew up with. Eire had long since been in on-again, off-again conflicts with the nearby Empire of Britannica, so when a pro-Imperial faction started a civil war, the Empire controversially chose to intervene on their behalf, occupying the entire island until order could be restored and a proper referendum could be held to determine Eire's future. It was during this occupation, in reprisal for a car bomb that killed his sister's fiance and teammate Christopher, that the newly promoted Lieutenant of the Crimson Watch special forces platoon, Arthur Nightingale, murdered Rosalie's mother. It was only later that Lieutenant Nightingale discovered that bad intel had been given to his unit and the true saboteurs got away, causing Arthur to question the honor of the service he was sworn to.
But the damage had been done to Rosalie, and when Eire held that referendum and, even more controversially, the option to join the Empire won by an incredibly thin margin, many people within the newly-annexed island wanted a way to continue living free from what they saw as the oppression of a corrupt and expansionist regime. Rosalie joined the Eire Liberation Front, or E.L.F., a militant insurgency dedicated to fighting back against Britannica on all fronts, and became one of its best operatives, able to disguise her signature red hair and blue eyes to look Zipangese instead of Eirish for better infiltration. But the burning desire to see Arthur Nightingale, now a member of International Crisis Response, punished for his crimes still remained in Rosalie's heart, so she chose to independently travel to Höllvania to kill Arthur in cold blood, until she was overtaken by the Techrot...at least, that was what would have happened if Entrati did not intervene.
His modifications were painful, and stripped her of so much of what she was, but when he was done, she found incredible new power surging through her body. She had been implanted with the template of the Warframe Ember, granting her pyrokinetic capabilities and the strength to carry onwards on her goal. Fire was incredibly effective against both the Techrot and the Scaldra, and she became a one-woman army that blazed a path of furious vengeance across Höllvania. Whether she would succeed in finally taking down her target, or bury the hatchet upon discovering the remorse Arthur felt for the horrors he committed in war, remains to be seen, but whatever was in her way would be rendered to ash by her glowing hands.
Thanks to
axelferdinan for this brilliant depiction of a fanmade Protoframe!

I’ve been playing Warframe since there were only a handful of ‘frames and tilesets. I participated in the event where the “greedy milk” meme came from. I watched the Formorians blow up Outposts. Warframe is a game I’ve been a part of off and on, but the 1999 update brought in one of my other big loves: alternate history fiction. So I just had to come up with a Protoframe of myself and I cannot thank Axel for stepping up to the challenge on this one!
