Stated by the Gunsmith to the wastelanders outside of the Boneyard and later to the NCR thirty years later, showing great promise in fire rate and having a high ammo count while using a rifled version of one of the most common ammo types in the wasteland. The NCR military, impressed by the rifle, would commission 500 rifles to arm local, newly established police/military forces in the Boneyard, Sac-town, Redding, The Hub, Junk Town, and Vault City. Being used with great success against cannibals, tribals, as well as raider factions, another commission of 1,000 would be ordered in 2197; however, in 2198, with the NCR acquiring an ArmaLite Weapons manufacturing Plant outside of the Boneyard, opening the ability to make their rifles for the NCR military troops as a new standard rifle without commissioning a gun maker to do so. Cancelling their order after 30% of the order was made, Gerik was still under contract with the NCR's military branch for producing the rifles already ordered, even though the state had cancelled the order.
Even though the already-made rifles were being phased out of service in 2198, the NCR adopted the Service rifle as the standard rifle of the NCR troopers. Gerik was forced to advertise the extra rifles to the private and civilian markets. having the rifles landing in both Law enforcement and raiders' hands, the NCR would bring the rifle to the senate and later the NCR Republic courts, trying to ban the rifle. lawmakers and law enforcement were panicked because the semi-automatic rifle fired almost as fast as the user could pull the trigger, armed with a .38 caliber rifle round. giving an unheard-of rate of fire, sparking fear that it was too advanced to let be in the hands of wastelanders and raiders, allowing them to have an edge over the NCR's military forces.
being heavily regulated, the magazine being cut to 10 rounds from the original 25, the box magazine reloads being made into a fixed box using stripper clips.
However, The Defender would find surprising success in NCR Law enforcement. Using it to combat organized crime as well, with skirmishes against the Shi, who were pressing to take over some of the NCR territories. Its reliability, Rapid fire power, turned it into a go-to for any user needing quick, accurate shots, Causing Alarm, restricted in NCR territories. Still in production to the present day with no regulations in the NCR territories, proving that innovation can cause Controversy and Lasting influence. Some wastelanders have made their home-made copy versions as well, but in much poorer quality in NCR territories than others in the wastelands, using junk scavenged.
5,000 made, 2,500 in the NCR regions, the rest in the wasteland, and more being made by the Blue Glowing Ghoul on commission for settlements as well as towns. This is the weapon that has made and kept the legendary gunsmith Gerik well-known on the west coast of the wasteland.
