Just started playing a classic for me.
Robot Wars: Arenas of Destruction.
I sed to play it on PS2 with my bro. Loved it and loved the show.
I thought that a simple Versus screen would suffice, inspired by the show, but I also took a few inspirations from other shows and movies.
The big bot on the left is modelled after the tank from the scenes in the future from the first Terminator, down to the wide shoulders. Although the headlight like eyes were a nod to another beloved BBC RC robot, Brum, who as I understand, was designed by someone who built the infamous House Robots. The Nuclear symbol was more of a nod to Cain, from Robocop 2. The drug dealer, turned brain in a jar, turned drug addicted cyborg giant.
Lotta 80s inspiration.
As for its opponent, I wanted to call back to the Robot Wars Simpsons episode, Season 15, Episode 9. "I, Doh-bot".
Homer fails to build a robot combatant for Bart for a local tournament, so he builds a shell on top of a tricycle with an eye hole and arm sleeves for him to sit in, fighting in the robots stead in the arena.
I just flipped a few details.
Homer's robot was red, looked like an American mail box, and was wielding a wooden mallet.
Mine is blue, looks like an English post box, and wields a standard hammer.
It's over the top and busy, true, but that's always what Robot Wars was, and I feel like I captured that pretty well.
I plan to continue making weekly content.
