It had been just about two days since Lilly fled from the only home she’d ever known. Following the plan her sister laid out, the pale wolf made her way southbound towards the upper tip of Idaho, using the sky to navigate. Obviously it was much easier at night. Look for the northern star, and just go the other way.
Lilly hoped that she’d get there after Kate did, but she knew given Kate’s current condition, she was the more nimble of the two, for once. Lilly hated waiting for Kate nowadays. To think that she once felt an intense envy for her sister byefore she married Garth. Now, all the white wolf could do was worry about her.
No wolf had really expected Tony to turn on everyone the way he did.
Except perhaps Lilly and her mother.
She’d seen Tony several times during the ordeal of Kate’s disappearance. His content promises of violence, his lecturing about old wolf laws and customs. Part of her expected the cultures of each pack to clash. But for him to lie the entire time and simply declare himself leader hours after the wedding? It was a textbook power play that not even Garth was in the loop about. Her mother Eve never trusted Tony, but her father Winston did, and it had gotten them all a dictator.
As she sauntered down the forest trail under the moonlight, Lilly huffed, and recalled the various events that lead her on this path, careful not to live through them again, lest she become lost. It was something Humphrey taught her long ago.
The inciting incident was Kate’s pregnancy. The pack was made to rejoice this coerced conception, but that was the day Lilly stopped being jealous of Kate for landing the wolf she fell in love with. Seeing the look on Kate’s face when they got a moment alone, seeing Kate cry out of fear. It made Lilly realize they were all prisoners in their own pack.
No, hostages.
Given Kate’s tearful confession over why she and Garth felt compelled to do what they did, Lilly’s only purpose to Tony was to be a bargaining chip for the newlyweds, who both cared for her dearly.
As long as they did as they were told, Lilly wouldn’t be harmed. That was Tony’s strategy. It wouldn’t work now, with both his legacy and his bargaining chip on the run. If Kate left, then Lilly had to go too because she’d be the first one to suffer for Kate’s rebellion. Only Eve knew of the plan, and while heartbroken at the prospect of never seeing her daughters again, Eve begged Lilly to go along to keep Kate safe and sane.
Lilly stopped briefly to yawn, then shook herself awake afterwards. There was no time to rest at this point. Rest would come when she and Kate were on the train into America. It would just be the two of them, and hopefully Humphrey. Knowing full well he’d left broken-hearted after the arranged marriage, Lilly hoped he was there. Kate needed a severe break, and she was aware that stress was not good for an expecting mother, especially one who wasn’t ready for pups so soon.
Her only regret, of course, was not convincing Garth to come with them. She tried, but it was agreed that he’d only slow them down. He needed to be the scapegoat and the distraction to put more ground between Tony’s wrath and them. Lilly only hoped that Garth wasn’t dead at this point. She truly wanted things to work out between them, even after all that’s happened.
Suddenly, Lilly heard a howl in the distance. A familiar howl that made her stop dead in her tracks and turn her head. That was Tony. Lilly expected search parties to be after them at some point, but hearing what seemed to be a calling back of scouts, it made it clear that they were on her tail. With a gulp to swallow her dread, Lilly began to trot quicker with what energy she could muster to widen the gap between herself and the one who had caused all of this strife…
Hours Later
Lilly panted, sitting at the side of a pond after taking a long drink. What she really needed was food to get some much needed energy. That, and not to pass out, though the drink certainly helped in keeping her awake. Now that she knew that Tony caught her trail, she’d either need to lose them, or beat them to the bridge. Once on the train, the likelihood of being followed into Idaho was slim.
What she wasn’t expecting was to be found by two rather unlikely animals.
“Hello! A moment please! I believe you’re the wolf we’ve been looking for!” Called a basso voice from behind. Lilly gasped and turned her head to see a pair of waterfowl waddling towards her. Lilly’s face immediately twisted into confusion, her soft voice coming out short with her breath.
“Birds? Why would you be looking for a wolf? Wait…” Lilly trailed off, remembering Kate describing the two male waterfowl that navigated Kate and Humphrey back home. This must’ve been them. Immediately her muzzle gained a smile.
“You’re the two who helped Kate, aren’t you?”
The duck nodded his head.
“Quite so! We found you on her behalf to ensure you knew that Tony is onto your plans, and has picked up your scent. His wolves are tracking you less than ten miles away. If I were you, I’d get moving quickly.”
“I’m aware of that. I heard Tony’s howl just a few hours ago. How is Kate?” Lilly asked.
Marcel then smiled as he approached the pale wolf. “Kate, is well. She had a slight hiccup in her route, but managed to get a new ally out of it. He’s escorting her as we speak.”
Lilly’s violet eyes widened. Kate picked up a companion on the way? It was the last thing she expected, but as long as her pregnant sister had someone trustworthy keeping her safe, that was one less thing for Lilly to worry about.
“That’s good to hear. I’ll give him my thanks once I meet them. I’m going the right way, yes?” Lilly asked, wanting to keep this brief so she could get going. Her stomach was really starting to complain, and she knew berries were the only thing that would do for now.
The two birds nodded after looking up towards the sky, Paddy giving the answer.
“It seems that you are. Straight down south. Keep heading that way and you’ll most certainly come into view of the mountain that the train will take you all to. You’ll almost certainly lose the easterners up there.”
Lilly sighed in relief as she got to her paws.
“Kate said the two of you were life savers. I don’t know why you’d help us wolves when you’d normally be on the menu, but thank you. I’ll see if there’s a way to make it up to you both once we’re all safe.”
Marcel bowed his head. “You don’t have to do anything. Kate and Humphrey asked us for help when they were lost in Idaho. Now we are helping her get back there, and you with her. It was getting boring just golfing around North America endlessly. Honestly, we should be the ones thanking you, mon ami!”
Lilly smiled brightly with a nod before she took off into the night where she was quickly out of the bird’s sight, now with some hope back in her heart. If two birds were helping them, she imagined what manner of animal was traveling with Kate. Was it another wolf, or something else entirely?…
