According to NASA, and ESA, the Rigel Kentaurus is the third-brightest star in the night sky. However, its brightness is due to the proximity of the system — commonly known as Alpha Centauri — which is the sun's closest neighbor, about 4.3 light-years away from Earth. Rigel Kentaurus is part of a triple star system, and the naked-eye star itself is a double star. Its two stars are dwarfs that spin around each other every 80 years at an average distance of 23 Earth-sun distances, or astronomical units. This puts the stars at about the same equivalent distance apart as the sun and Uranus in our own solar system, according to University of Illinois astronomer Jim Kaler. By itself, Alpha Centauri A is the fourth brightest star in the sky; just a bit dimmer, by 0.02 of a magnitude, than Arcturus. It is a yellow star of the same type (G2) as the sun, and it is about 25 percent larger. Alpha Centauri B is an orange K2-type star, slightly smaller than the sun. Proxima Centauri is a red dwarf about seven times smaller than the sun, or one-and-a-half times bigger than Jupiter. Alpha Centauri A (aka Rigil Kentaurus): A Yellow dwarf star, in the form of a Binary Star, it is a G2V type star.
Alpha Centauri B (aka Toliman): A Orange dwarf star, in the form of a Binary Star, it is a K1V type star.

Proxima Centauri (short name: Proxima) (aka Alpha Centauri C): A Red dwarf star, it is a M5.5Ve type star, is a located 4.2465 light-years from Earth (1.3020 pc) away from the Sun in southern constellation of Centaurus.



Moltar (Known as Alpha Centauri A I): A Molten Mercury-like planet with volcanic activity, closer to the Rigil Kentaurusa's Stars.

In 2058 A.D., Earth is an environmental disaster. It is estimated that within 10 years the planet will be unable to support Human life. The United Global Space Force and the Global Sedition both wanted to colonize this world. It takes 10 years to reach this world from Earth. The mission of the Jupiter 2 was to travel to this world and construct a Hypergate similar to the one orbiting Earth, providing instantaneous access to the planet for colonists The script states that the planet also has an abundance of Dimondium, a substance that could help restore a dying Earth. The unproduced sequel movie would have featured the Jupiter reaching Alpha Prime, only to discover that it had already been colonized by the Global Sedition. The United Global Space Force initiates the Jupiter Mission. A family will be sent to the nearest habitable planet, Alpha Prime, where they will build a HyperGate enabling the people of Earth to evacuate safely. Unfortunately, the Global Sedition has hired Dr. Zachary Smith to sabotage the mission. Smith sneaks aboard the Jupiter 2 and programs the mission Robot to destroy the Robinson Family 16 hours into their voyage while they slumber in Cryo-Stasis. Smith is betrayed by the Global Sedition who render him unconscious while still aboard the Jupiter 2. Smith wakes minutes before the Robot begins its task. He is now stranded with the Robinsons and the damage the Robot does to the ship renders the travelers lost in space.
