It also is aesthetics to exemplify the thoughts that inspired the stories. Something that exposition, a practice a bit taboo in storytelling, has preferring instead "show, don't tell." It's a bit hard to "show" what is by its very nature ineffable. This is why Einstein called quantum effects "spooky action at a distance" - it was outside laws and principles of the reality we know.
