Not that I'd wish to impugn the artist or the military necessity of the situation - I don't recall if the blade had been used before this, though the blood suggests it was - but I wonder whether it would be politic for Sir Fardon's tail blade to be sheathed in thick cloth (quilted fleece for water resistance?) until some sort of quick release fastener was undone. For both blade-care reasons and also so you don't end up landing with a sharp spike that looks like it might harm someone unnecessarily.
