It’s Autism Awareness (and Acceptance) Month; a month important for those under the Autism spectrum, like me.
I remember a few years after I was born, I was diagnosed under PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified); it wasn’t a true autistic label, but at the time, I showcased symptoms related to autism.
Some autistic habits that can happen with me:
- My arms fluttered like a hummingbird
- I wasn’t very verbal at times
- I shook my head like a bobblehead
- I made small screaming-like sounds
- I struggled with social interactions and kept to myself (not making any long term friends as a result)
- I had overly broad interests in certain subjects (i.e. theme parks and roller coasters)
- I was very emotional and had lots of stress issues.
As I grew up, I learned to control most of these ticks (or, at least, try to keep from doing it while in public), but I was still very emotional and couldn’t control myself at times.
However, while I still have my habits, I am not ashamed of them as they make me who I am.
While I could use help in life, I do not need a rescue line, because I never needed it.
