The cashier acts weirded out by Felix's question, but I completely understand why he asked that. The PoS at stores (here, at least) look exactly the same when they're ready for my card as when they're not ready for my card. There's no way to tell if it's ready to accept payment! After many failed attempts with them (and many irritated "It's not ready!" and "Wait a second!" admonishments from cashiers), I started asking "Is it ready?" before I tapped or inserted my card. The cashiers find this annoying, too, but at least they can't yell at me for trying to pay early, I suppose.

TL;DR: You're fine, Felix. I would have asked the same thing. (fist bump)

PoS: Does that stand for "Point of Sale" or "Piece of Shit?"

Point of Sale...but I suppose the latter would fit often enough, too.
