Given the old Oswald Rabbit cartoons are public domain, I thought about reviving one of the characters. Unfortunately, Disney (ironically) owns the copyright to the characters themselves. Here's how I WOULD have drawn Fanny, at any rate...

As I hear it, Oswald and Co. were used by the Disney studio in something just as they were entering public domain, giving the studio the means to swoop in and claim them as Disney characters. The specifics elude me, but something along those lines.
Supposedly, Rita Mouse (a rather sexualized clone of Minnie Mouse seen in a handfull of shorts from the Van Beuren -sp?- company back in the 30's before Walt sued and the character was retired) is public domain since her shorts have been so since the 1960's. Given you haven't seen other companies release new Rita material, one must assume Disney has a legal war-hammer at the ready, however. Not sure how that would work, but who dares tempt The Mouse?
