So... trying out my camera on my new phone.. not the greatest quality but it's better than the iphone I had. Still figuring it out, I noticed some camera apps for it I may try. At least until I can either find my old camera or get a new one.
I'll scrap this later.
It's a skeleton for a Sive posable figure I'm working on. It's the first time I've made a sergal... so the anatomy may be off a bit.
She's sort of my test, when I get her hands feet and head sculpted and get her wrapped in fluff and furred It will give me a better Idea of the adjustments I will need to make on my next one.
Her hips are bothering me currently, but I will remake her once I get the hang of their build. They should be wider for my sergie :c
She measures about 13 inches from head to tail, and stands about 9 or 10. I'm guessing cause my ruler grew legs and disappeared.
I'm hoping that when I sculpt her feet they will be wide and heavy enough to support her weight so he can stand with her tail closer to that of a raptor since their tails stick straight out rather than down like it is. It's bent down to help her stand until that happens.
Crossing my fingers that she wont be too arm and chest heavy to stand on her feet. But like I said, she's basically a dummy for me to get the feel of how a sergal is built so I can improve and make better figures.
Her fur's going to be troublesome... I have to figure out a way to dye it a teal color and save the softness of the fur. @.@
I'm open to tips and critiques at the moment.

Well so far it's just copper wire, aluminum foil and wax floral tape. I'm working on the wire to support the hands and feet. I should have taken a picture after I did that. Made her hips wider too. I'll take another pic of how I do her feet when I'm done. Then I can start sculpting!
Huh. Posable? That seems like it'd be hard without joints, just a malleable frame doesn't seem like it'd be a good idea... but if you think it'll work go for it.
Just looking at the frame it looks like it'd be better suited to be a sculpture rather than a posable figure... and that'd solve the fur problem fairly easily.
I don't think the hips are necessarily the problem, they could be wider but it looks to me like the main problems are the legs are too short and the body overall is a little thin, but it's just a skeleton so the body being thin might well be solved by the finished body.
...Actually the tail is in the wrong place too.
...And the head and neck might be a little big.
Hmm.
Anyways, I look forward to seeing the rebuilt version you mentioned, and if you need any references go ahead and give me a ring.

wow, thanks for some more in depth tips.
I really need a better camera, I noticed that from the angle I had my phone it made what was closer look larger than what was further away, like the head looking big and the legs looking short.
I've straightened the legs out more which added more height and the tail is now straight back, close to a raptors tail.
The issue I'm having now are the sculpted parts possibly being a bit big... but that's hard to judge until the thin layer of stuffing and fur is added. I need to get pictures of how it looks now up...
I like the artists that draw Sergals with slightly longer necks like Gayscream, it just gives them a little more of an aggressive and alluring look. I have a feeling that it will even its self out once its furred.
I have worked with jointed figures before and thought about that at first, but adding fur on top of the clay/ceramic/plastic would hinder the movements and buckle in odd places. Glueing the fur down would make it hard and rough since it's very porous... So I thought of going with a strong wire armature much like what they use for stop motion puppets to keep them stiff and upright between shots.
Meh, I really do need to take some new pics to show some changes, thanks for the feedback! I can use some when it's done as well :b

Well, most artists draw them without real regard to how long the fur is on each part, they just sort of make the outer edges sort of fuzzy. It's not a bad thing in the least, it actually makes them look a bit more realistic to draw how they would look without fur and then add on a little bit of fuzzyness to the edges since the fur would lay down on an actual living creature even if it were long. With a tiny figure it might be hard to get a fur on them that would lay down properly and not just be fuzzy all the time, which is why I was saying it might look a lot nicer sculpted but I'm no expert when it comes to posable models, let alone ones with actual hair on them!
I tend to draw the necks fairly short compared to other artists, simply out of preference as well since Rage used to draw them like that back in the day and Mick sort of did too, but Mick's very rarely been consistent. I always use

and
http://images.wikia.com/goldring/im.....references.jpg
as my references for them.
So wait, you're going to use this for a stop-motion animation?

I'm actually using those refs to guide me, along with a ton of heads I've saved from Rage and Mick and a few others that have their anatomy down pretty well.
The fur I have is a long pile fur, so I will have to shave it and do some hair styling so it looks right. When I upload that process it will look like a massive fluff ball before I trim and style. But the fur is extremely forgiving, if I brush it either direction it will lay down very nicely. So I'm sure if I add some natural hair styling product that won't make it stiff, I can mimic semi-realistic fur.
And no...unfortunately... I wont be making a stop motion animation. But I'm hoping to make lots of these so maybe people that want them can make a stop motion animation if they want to.
I already have plans for making moveable jaws, fingers, joints, ears, etc. I just have to get the feel of it before I jump in head long. But I've got years of sculpting behind me so it shouldn't be an issue, it's just the first time I've tried to make sculptures that move. I like to call them puppets instead of dolls...
My cousin is going to a film academy to be a movie director, producer and a photographer.. I'm sure if I went to him with a good story and plot and all the figures ready that he would help me make a stop motion short if it got that far. My husband also has a talent with movie editing and photography.
You've given me an idea, It would be awesome to make a short stop motion film even if I don't do it myself but supply the puppets that would still be cool.
I'd love to eventually make everyone's Sergal that are avid Sergal fans. There are a handful of well known Sergals on here that I have info saved on incase I get asked to make them when I get this one done. The next test will be making one with moveable joints like mentioned above, so I can offer a fully posable puppet, or a puppet that can do basic movements and is more for looks.
My next challenge is to make Nevreans and hopefully Talyxians and Augdner once more information becomes available of the later two. Hopefully by then I can get my hands on some silicone to make parts that don't have fur but can still be moved, much like the puppets made for Tim Burton's films.
lol.... we should probably move this to notes if we keep discussing this :b
