On April 7, 1995, “A Goofy Movie” was released. And here I am (plush form) posing with my original VHS copy.
And of course I have fond memories of seeing it in theaters when it came out — I was 8 (about to turn 9). Even the film’s epic soundtrack (“Stand Out”, “On The Open Road”, “I 2 I”, etc.) still lingers in my mind.
Directed by Kevin Lima, and produced overseas at Disney Animation’s Paris division, this movie came out during the height of Disney renaissance era (after “Lion King” and before “Pocahontas”). It was radically different from what we were used to seeing from the company. It wasn’t a fairytale or even really a “fable”, but rather a 90’s teen comedy set on a cross country excursion with their classic character Goofy at the wheel. And along for the ride is Goofy’s reluctant son Max (aged a bit from “Goof Troop”). Odd premise…but it WORKED!
I take it most of you have seen it, so I won’t go into plot details. But, I have enjoyed this movie quite a bit during my childhood, and continue to enjoy it!
Cheers to 30 years!
P.S.: I have met Goofy’s voice actor Bill Farmer at Planet Comicon back in 2016. And although I don’t have photos, I talked to him for a bit, and he was such sweet, awesome guy.
