Man, despite your own feelings, you've pulled off a very good piece, I agree in the background being more to my liking than the character...indeed backgrounds are perhaps the main area ya need to work on, characters you've cleared with in your own style, backgrounds are more difficult to do, you've pulled it off very well man.. lol since all ya have to do is look out of your window for inspiration for this kinda scene! XD
