"To clarify: Richie was in his first relationship with a girl called Tony, a terribly abusive relationship, but thankfully that relationship ended."
This art describes Richie's inner state at that time in his life
Richie's relationship with Tony was destructive and it left deep marks on his psyche. When it had started, he had been enthusiastic and willing to give himself to the relationship. He genuinely loved Tony and believed that her love was real too. But as time went on, things changed. Tony began to neglect him, her attention became superficial, and her demands became increasingly selfish. She seemed oblivious to the fact that Richie was losing himself, his physical and emotional state was deteriorating, but she continued to make claims and demand more and more from him.
Richie found it hard to accept her behaviour because he kept believing that if he loved her enough, if he did everything right, the relationship would recover. He hoped that if he pleased her, showed his loyalty and care, she would return his love. But that didn't happen. Instead, Tony began to treat him as her property. She increasingly ignored his feelings, disregarded his needs, and began to impose her desires, including in the intimate realm.
Toni used Richie to fulfil her desires (including intimacy) without regard for his refusal or discomfort. It was a kind of abuse that he couldn't or wouldn't realise at the time. He was trying to please her because he loved her and was afraid of losing her. But his own feelings and boundaries took a back seat. Richie's inner conflict was agonising: he felt he had to keep pleasing Tony, even if his own body and soul resisted.
When he'd been away on work for a week, he'd been on edge, tired of the constant struggle with himself and her attitude. And it was at that very moment that Tony cheated on him, without even hiding it. She did it right in their home, breaking the last line of trust between them. For Richie, it was a blow he couldn't get over. He came home, and faced with this betrayal, he felt everything inside him crumble.
It wasn't just the betrayal. It was a final blow to his self-esteem, to his confidence that he was worthy of love and respect. He felt like a complete nonentity, his world crumbled, and depression set in and consumed him. Not only was he losing relationships, but also his faith in himself and the people around him. He began to feel empty, like he wasn't capable of real love, of real caring. Everything he had given Tony had been in vain, and now his heart was empty and his body exhausted.
Thankfully, thanks to his nearest and dearest, he was able to come out of his depression, after the whole situation.
