In japanese Folklore the deity Inari had messangers called the Kitsune. They are foxes. In honor to this Kami, at her shrine in Kyoto, several fox statues are placed holding various objects. One of them holds a Key to the rice granary the shrine is dedicated to. This is the object the fox here is holding in their mouth.
