Kha'eshan Bestiary: Fire Drake
We once again return to the world of Kha'eshan to encounter one of the more supernatural creatures native to the Eruth continent.
The Fire Drake is a descendant of the Elysian Microdrake and has changed little from its ancestor... except for growing huge and gaining the ability to breathe fire. It is the apex predator of the open grasslands, dominating every rival with its breath weapon.
People fear this solitary and aggressive beast, giving it a wide berth whenever possible. Unlike the True Dragons of Eoros, Drakes, both on Eoros and Kha'eshan, are more beastial in nature, with no higher thought processes, such as inter-species empathy or the ability to employ complex methods of communication. They are animals. Very dangerous animals.
Interactions within their species are a bit more complex. Drakes use their fire to mark their territory, make shows of force to avoid unnecessary combat, and take part in annual mating rituals that involve a lot of guttural "singing". If a male wishes to impress a female, he will perform a sort of mating song, comparable to a mix of a bullfrog croaking and an alligator growl. If two males end up competing for the same female, they will expel jets of flames from their mouths to see who can breathe the farthest. This is usually enough to end the contest without bloodshed.
Once the male and female mate, they will go their separate ways with the female laying a clutch of around 5 eggs and incubating them for 6 months. Once the eggs hatch, she will then rear the young for another 3 years before they are big enough to fend for themselves.
Fire Drakes will hunt and consume anything they come across. Breathing fire puts them at a huge advantage against all "normal" creatures that live in the grasslands.
