I love cosy pubs with their genuinely warm atmosphere. Back in 2015, when I painted these scenes, I looked at tons of photos of inviting places and visited some lovely ones myself to soak in the vibe and create Jahnz's place, a welcoming spot for his neighbors to spend their evenings. Boozer's town reflects a little haven of safety and homeliness, and Jahnz's pub embodies that even more. Despite the hard work of keeping his business alive, and the tiredness from many sleepless nights, he’s happiest when everyone else is having fun.
Someday, I’d really love to repaint the pub and its little nooks, packed with all the tiny details I’ve imagined. For example, I see it with a kitchen that serves soups of the day, handmade pies, both sweet and savory, crisp and honeyed bugs, and selections of dried fruit and nuts. There's even a small backyard brewery offering three kinds of homebrew. It’s a fairly big house with two stories and a small room for him to stay in. Jahnz would also step outside regularly to do business with traders, picking up new deliveries and rare treats from all across Yria.
Every Friday, he hosts a quiz night, where customers team up to solve fun riddles and win quirky, rare prizes. Sometimes, one of those prizes is a legendary cocktail called Dragon Gulch: a drink served in a dragon-shaped ceramic bowl, lit on fire when it’s brought to the table. A few folks have even singed their whiskers when the first spark went up in a tiny explosion. It’s known for its mild psychedelic effects, thanks to a special ingredient sourced by Boozer. Only he knows where it comes from, and since the supplier is notoriously slow to reply to Boozer’s letters, Dragon Gulch is treated as a small legend in town. The pub is packed whenever there’s a larger fresh batch to share.
Boozer, always knowing how to treat himself, often invites travelers in to share the warmth and friendly spirit. Having seen many exciting things and endured hardships in his long life, he understands the struggles of travel and the magic of a cosy place to rest and recharge.
A little worldbuilding on the side. I hope you enjoy. :)
