Before You Lose Consciousness..
I put myself in the position of the poor animals that fall victim to Fluttershy's STARE. It was a frightening feeling. I imagine it akin to falling asleep, then waking up in a groggy stupor as if you never realized you fell asleep, but something was amiss. It's like a lucid dream, but only that you are an active watcher of yourself as you exist in a state of being hollow and detached. But since it is a dreamlike state of mind, to you this existence of watching yourself do things against your will is absolutely normal.
You wake up in a panic five minutes later. A scream of residual fear wants to erupt from your throat, but you nip it in the bud right away. Because the last thing you want to do is rouse that lemon yellow equine again and have her crush your will with but a glance...
Why else do you think all the animals behave around her?
I fucking love Fluttershy. No, I'm not a fucking "brony".

You just have to take a chance and watch an episode of it. The first two were a two parter that had a bit more of an epic/moral-of-the-story feel, and all but about 2 episodes of the rest of the first season were pretty good. And four episodes are pretty unforgettable and rather hilarious once you've watched enough to get an idea of the characters.
I would explain more on it, but to be honest I don't much like huge discussions on my art.

And it does not treat it's audience like "children" but rather just seeks to be entertaining at a level everyone can partake in. :D
There are a few lines tossed in there that kids might not even get, ('Huff' the magic dragon was mentioned at one point when a dragon character got grumpy) clear indication that they do want to speak to parents (and by extension, adults).
In fact, I'd say the only people who can't really enjoy this as much as others would be tween males, as they are probably too concerned about acting adult and 'male' that they wont let themselves enjoy it. Us grown-ups don't worry about being grown up. :D

It isn't. Lauren Faust, the person in charge of the reboot and season one executive producer, hated G1.
(note: G1 == generation one, Hasbro's first MLPs. "Friendship is Magic" is G4, or generation 4. As can be expected, there's G2, G3, G3.5, etc that corresponds to all the other versions that Hasbro has released over the years.)

Fluttershy fits exactly into the "Quiet bomb" catagory. She's shy, and friendly once she gets to know you. but god help you if you piss her off.
I find her character interesting because she even has the history to go with it, being bullied and shunned, but staying quiet and just taking it. It really gives you a sense that there is something more to her, that she keeps hidden for fear of hurting the people she cares about.

Not that they can't, but they aren't.
Bronies are guys. It's kind of the point of the word "bro" being super-imposed over "pony". For girls to take it and claim it as all fans of the show makes it lose it's meaning and really lowers the awesomeness that so many guys ARE fans of a show and concept that was initially aimed at girls.

Although I personally have no issue with women taking the term and applying it to all fans of the new show, I see what you are saying in that it is something extra cool or interesting that so many of us guys are open about our love of a show that according to the "rules" of our society, isn't really acceptable for guys to like.
I am just glad friends for the most part are cool with me being a fan of a show that some people claim "is for little girls only".

I think by now the meaning has just expanded beyond the gender as an over-arching term for the internet-based peripheral demographic.
And if it's not, DAMNIT IT SHOULD BE! WE HUNGER FOR MORE! LOVE AND TOLERANCE WILL CONSUME THE FUCK OUT OF EVERYTHING!
Anyway, titles exist for one thing, brevity. :)

Here ya go
I didn't get it at first not because I am not a pony fan but because I am not a Pokemon fan.

So very true. But it seems that fans of MLP think calling EVERYONE else who is a fan a "brony". I even made a journal post on it, and folks literally didn't grasp that. It's retarded and turns me away from it so I just enjoy it on my own without really dealing with the idiocy of a fandom.
I think that has more to do with the idea that there are actual adults out there who enjoy a children's show. I mean, my older sister, who is around 30 years old and has a baby, feels that it's ridiculous that I enjoy MLP from time to time. I invite her to join me and she's all like "But it's a children's show!" It's silly.
I like this picture by the way. Fluttershy probably isn't my favorite character. I'm not sure I have settled on a favorite just yet. However, the STARE. Oh yes...the stare...

Rainbow Dash was the first guess at being my fave, but for me Fluttershy has so much more depth to her and a few lines that really make her.. "real". As the younger version of her, she was lanky and long legged, and I Loved that. And then when she tells Pinkie "I'm a year older than you" just really nailed it as great one-shot character development. It just felt like a line that stands out really well to me.
As for the rest about the adults and guys liking the show, I totally get you there. I think thats what a lot of naysayers you have around places like FA that roll their eyes at MLP stuff. It's like.. c'mon, give it a LITTLE bit of a chance. It really does have some more older-related humour and anyone can enjoy it. Hell, in one episode they sneaked the metaphor for a cuss word into the dialogue: "Oh horse apples!"

XD To be honest, I haven't watched it quite as passionately as a lot of the really hard core fans. I mostly like the show because toward the end, there's that little summary that gives some grand lesson about life. And the funny thing I find is that the revelations put forward at the end of the show are things I'm just now realizing down in the depths of my soul. And this honestly is intended for children, little girls even! I wish young men would watch this just so that they could have that nagging little voice in the back of their heads telling them about right and wrong and generally healthful emotional development.
It's being shoehorned as such. I just have a personal problem with it. Other folks can call themselves that, just please let me be a fan and that's it. So as I said in another comment, i just avoid the rest of the MLP fandom for what its worth. Ponychans and equestriadaily are just hive of scum and villainy to me. =-p
Personally I have always seen it as more like a mother's glare of correction to her child (note how it isn't JUST the staring, there is also the lecturing involved too) turned up to 11. There is almost certainly some subtle magic involved too, but the effects, to me, are almost nothing like what you describe.
