Character
Gyun-Fai Man was born and raised in Hong Kong. Her family lived in a small apartment in Hong Kong that was barely big enough for her parents and her older brother. She never liked the city, but neither her nor her family could afford to move. It was proverbially choking her, but she had to make do with what she had, finding parks and other places where she could freely roam and escape the confines of her home. Even school was a welcome escape from her living conditions. Gyun-Fai was known as a hard-working student. But more remarkably was her ability to engage her classmates in listening to her retelling stories she had read in the books she used to escape from reality and into the wondrous worlds of fiction. Gyun-Fai was often found among a group of friends, her "herd". She was rarely seen alone, and her friends appreciated the little things she was able to do to repay them for their company.
When she grew older and went to higher education, she took on some extracurricular activities in organising social events to meet even more people, and had a reputation of a social butterfly. She also took interest in religion. Even though she didn't follow any faith herself, the worlds religions and mythologies were a treasure trove of stories. She managed to complete a study in theology and graduated cum laude, but after her study, it was hard for her to find work. Not to mention that tensions were growing in neighbouring mainland China due to the Fossil Fuel Wars. Their measures made Hong Kong even more isolated from the rest of China and more people felt trapped in the city. She eventually got employed as a local government clerk to get at least some income. But everything changed two years later on K-Day, when Hong Kong became the home front of the war against the Horde of the Living Dead from mainland China. The city became a war zone at its border, trying to hold back the Horde, with international (and later interstellar) military to assist on the effort. The military hired her to assist in religious services, as she was one of the few people who was knowledgable about multiple religions. But even though she liked helping out the community, Hong Kong didn't feel like home. If anything, Gyun-Fai wanted to leave this place the first opportunity she could find.
In an unexpected twist of fate, Earth's welcome into the Galactic Community opened up a door for her. The Terran Fleet were looking for crew for their ships, and one of the open functions drew her interest: ship's chaplain. For this job, you had to be familiar with a religion to host religious services for the crew. Gyun-Fai, however, was familiar with most of Earth's religion, and this made her an attractive candidate for the job, as she could take on the position that would otherwise be taken by several people, each one from a different religion. Captain Higgs hired her into his crew, on the condition she may need to study some alien cultures as well. This was not a problem for her; on the contrary, she saw it as a great opportunity.
Gyun-Fai is well respected on the Pioneer. She cared deeply for her fellow crew members, and was doing her best to accommodate all religious needs on board, and hosts many social events on board. The crew is her new "herd". Her atheist worldview was actually appreciated by the crew, as they saw her as a neutral intermediary whenever there was a religious conflict on board. Her only strong personal conviction is her vegan lifestyle, refusing to consume any kind of animal produce. She also helped decorate some of the ships offices and public spaces, and she was a strong advocate of captain Cobenino's idea to decorate the corridors, as she has an aversion to bland spaces.
