Sleep had proven illusive. The fresh, cool air of an early autumn night filtered in through the open windows of the longhouse; a welcome reprieve from the stifling days of summer that was still all too vivid in her mind. Shadows danced across the thatched ceiling as the glowing hearth flickered; the gently crackling fire still had a bit of life left in it; the night was still young. She sat up in bed, watching the small dwindling fire slowly turning to coals as she rubbed the sleep from her eyes. There would be time yet for sleep, but wishing it to come was no cure for insomnia.
The gentle evening breeze whispered in her ears and tickled her fur as she slowly crept through the small, sleepy village; the humble smattering of longhouses filled with sleeping Varg that was all that was left of her people. In the distance somewhere an owl called out; perhaps communicating to its mate that it had found their next meal. Or perhaps he was just restless as well. She quickly found herself walking beyond the encampment. This had become something of a ritual for her; she would just follow her feet where ever they might take her.
Tonight that ritual found her walking amongst the wheat fields; the moonlight caught the gently swaying crop and almost made the field seem to glow as if by some magic. And in a way it was. The village elders had seen hundreds of harvests between them back across the sea, and they were certain it would take several years for the fields to establish enough for a sustainable harvest. That had been only a year ago, and yet Eabha now strode through a strong, healthy crop of wheat that would make for a bountiful harvest in only a few short weeks. The soil had proven fertile, the seeds strong, and the fates had smiled on Eabha and her clan.
The harvest last autumn had been sparse. The elders had said it would be; the fields needed time to establish and the seed they had brought with them was not native to this land. All the same, she could not help but be disappointed. These lands had ultimately been kind to the Varg; there was plentiful game and many fruits, nuts and mushrooms to sustain them. But the life of hunter gathers was inherently transient; she did not want that for her people. The voyage across the sea had been trial enough, and the suffering they endured before sailing to the new world had taken its toil on her clan. Survival was not enough. They needed a home.
She outstretched a hand, the soft plumes of wheat tickling the fur on her palm. In a few short weeks the harvest would begin, and the smell of freshly baked bread would waft through the village. She gazed out at the expanse of that magical grain, glowing faintly under the starlight. It wasn’t just grain, it was stability, hope. She found herself smiling as she stood amongst the wheat. It meant that this encampment was no longer just a camp; it could become a village in earnest. Somewhere they could live, instead of just survive. They had come to these shores nearly two years ago and for nearly two years home had been across the sea; a land that had been stolen from them; a home that they may well never see again. For the first time in nearly two years… she knew she was home. Her people had a home.

"New" being highly debatable in this case; it has been sitting waiting for me to upload it since the end of last September, I am very, very lazy about getting my art up it seems. But I knew I wanted to at least write something for it, and I have been really struggling for motivation to write. So you positive comments always do help, truly. I am glad you like the piece, Donny, have a lovely day <3
