Whenever a piece is finished, the urge arises to come up with a new idea for a new one, so I don't have to ponder over a possible subject first when I could draw instead. And immediately, this very thought creeps in between: what would happen if I couldn't find an idea considering all the previous pieces with their already visualized thoughts? In this moments I reflect on life, which offers many everyday situations beg to be captured, and life offers countless characters from movies and television to receive fan art. So there's always something to work on.
Today it was time for some fan art again. As I'm writing this, I'm also wondering why I didn't give it a try much sooner, since it's about a protagonist in one of the greatest animes, no, movies in general.
When I was preparing the sketch, I wasn't sure whether it would be a brightly colored drawing in the middle of the forest or something more subdued. I wasn't sure whether this piece should focus solely on Mononoke itself or have a background too. Halfway through, the idea of depicting the wolves in the background entered the mind, and a little later came the idea of removing them, replaced by some Kodama. The wolves were allowed to stay.
Since I know nothing about wolves I tried to recreate the simplified style of the wolves in the anime using references. Interestingly, I find the wolf in the top left the most beautiful part of the whole drawing. But I really like it at all as I ultimately decided against a dominant green leaf background. At the same time i tried to give the shadows in the light areas a reddish tinge. This kept the color palette to a charming reddish-brown only. The fact that the female cheetah, although obviously anthropomorphic, has a feral appearance due to her hunched posture and hanging arms somehow makes it complete: There is a woman who wants to leave no doubt about her wolfishness.
